Testing for Mycoplasma Contamination Using PCR

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

PCR kits for this procedure are available from several commercial sources. Although they are very sensitive and can be used to identify specific species of Mycoplasma, they are also limited by the primers included in the kit. There are more than 100 species of Mycoplasma, but the kits only include primers for the most common ones. Although infection by the other species is rare, cells may be contaminated by these rare species and thus test negative by these kits.
