Sampling Mouse and Rat Serum from the Saphenous Vein

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

The saphenous vein runs laterally down the back of both rear legs of the animal and can be seen easily after the legs have been shaved. Saphenous blood collection can be used for small amounts of blood involving serial collection. Another advantage is that the animal does not need to be anesthetized and restrained for long periods of time. Approximately 0.10.2 mL can be obtained per collection. Blood collection should not exceed 79 of the animal's total blood volume or 1 of total body weight every 24 wk. This protocol was based on information from the Animal Resources, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Core Facilities website.
