Administering Anesthesia to Rabbits

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

When setting up to anesthetize rabbits, consider factors that can affect the choice of anesthetics. These include the breed, age, health status, concurrent medication, and demeanor/disposition of the animals. They also include the length and type of operation or procedure to be performed; all possible effects of the anesthesia on the scientific objectives of the study; any special facilities and equipment required (e.g., when using volatile anesthetics); and the personal knowledge, experience, and skill of personnel who will be performing the procedures. It is essential to consult with a staff veterinarian. This procedure has been modified, with permission, from Cornell University (http://www.research.cornell.edu/care/documents/ACUPs/ACUP103.pdf).
