Injecting Rabbits Intravenously

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

The best route of injection for soluble antigens without adjuvant is intravenous (i.v.). It delivers the antigen efficiently to lymphoid organs like the spleen and lymph nodes. However, there is a risk of anaphylactic shock, and without adjuvant there is no depot effect. Thus, intravenous injection is not usually used as the primary route of immunization. Anaphylactic shock can be prevented by a prior injection of an antihistamine. Contact your institutional animal care and use committee for guidance.
