Freezing Cells for Liquid Nitrogen Storage

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

Cell lines are stored by slow freezing in a solution of nutrients and cryoprotectants. It is important to note that liquid nitrogen (LN2) is at 185C. Safety precautions should include gloves and a face mask when working in the LN2 freezer. Air pockets within the frozen vials stored in liquid nitrogen can expand rapidly, causing the cryovial to explode.
