Preparing Freund's Adjuvant

(Protocol summary only for purposes of this preview site)

Freund's adjuvant is a water-in-oil immunopotentiator composed of mineral oil with the surfactant mannide monoleate that is available in two forms, Complete Freund's adjuvant and Incomplete Freund's adjuvant (Freund and McDermott 1942; Freund 1956). The complete form (CFA) contains inactivated (heat-killed) mycobacteria (usually M. tuberculosis), whereas the incomplete form (IFA) lacks the mycobacterial components. Fruend's adjuvant attracts macrophages and stimulates both cell-mediated and humoral immunity.
